A downloadable tool for Windows

Effekseer is a free, open-source particle effect editor (MIT license, sponsored in part by Epic Games' MegaGrants program) for building particle, ribbon, and mesh-based VFX for games — with a mature node-based editor and runtimes for every major engine.

Why this exists

Itch.io's Tools section has several paid particle/VFX editors ($15–25: Pixelpart, Juice FX, Fluid FX) aimed at exactly this audience — game developers who want juicy effects without hand-coding shaders. Effekseer does the same job, is free and open-source, has a mature Windows desktop editor and runtimes for every major engine, and is actively maintained.

Features

  • Real-time node-based particle effect editor with live preview
  • Exports to Unity, Unreal Engine, Godot 4, and a standalone C++/C# runtime
  • Supports both 2D and 3D effects: sprites, ribbons, trails, meshes, sound triggers
  • Curve editors for size, color, alpha, and motion over an effect's lifetime
  • Effect files are lightweight and can be swapped between projects/engines
  • Actively developed, with backing from Epic Games MegaGrants

Install

  1. Download Effekseer.zip
  2. Extract anywhere and run Effekseer.exe (portable, no installer needed)

How it works

  1. Create a new effect and add particle/ribbon/mesh nodes in the node graph
  2. Preview the effect live in the 3D viewport as you tune curves and emitters
  3. Save the .efk effect file
  4. Drop the effect file and matching runtime plugin into your game engine project

How it compares

  • Price — Effekseer: free. Pixelpart: $24.99. Juice FX: $14.96. Fluid FX: $14.96.
  • Node-based real-time editor — Effekseer: yes. Pixelpart: yes. Juice FX: no (preset-based). Fluid FX: partial.
  • Engine runtimes (Unity/Unreal/Godot) — Effekseer: yes, all three. Pixelpart: limited. Juice FX: no. Fluid FX: no.
  • Actively maintained / funded — Effekseer: yes (backed by Epic Games MegaGrants). The paid alternatives: unclear.
